The Cash-in-Transit Association of South Africa (CITASA) is deeply saddened and outraged by the loss of four Cash-in-Transit (CIT) employees who were killed in separate CIT robbery incidents on Monday, 7 September 2026, in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.
This is an incredibly sad day for the South African Cash-in-Transit industry. Within a matter of hours, four members of our industry lost their lives while performing their duties. Our deepest sympathies go to their families, loved ones, colleagues and management during this devastating time.
The incidents occurred in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, the two provinces that continue to carry the highest risk for CIT robberies in the country. They also occurred on a Monday and during the late-afternoon period, both of which have historically been identified and continue to be regarded as high-risk periods for CIT robberies.
These tragic incidents once again demonstrate the extreme and escalating violence directed at CIT personnel. The people who carry and protect the country’s cash are increasingly being confronted by heavily armed and organised criminal groups prepared to use extreme violence, with devastating consequences for employees, their families and communities.
SERIOUS INTERVENTION IS REQUIRED
CITASA is calling for serious and urgent intervention to stop the continued targeting of CIT personnel. The continued targeting of CIT crews cannot be viewed as ordinary criminal activity. These are organised and violent attacks that place the lives of employees, members of the public and law-enforcement personnel at significant risk.
The industry remains committed to working with SAPS, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and other relevant role players to strengthen intelligence-led interventions, disrupt organised criminal networks and prevent further loss of life.
FOUR LIVES TOO MANY
Today, the CIT industry mourns four colleagues who lost their lives in the line of duty.
We honour their service and the sacrifices made by CIT personnel every day to keep the country’s cash ecosystem functioning. Their deaths are a profound loss to their families, their colleagues and the entire industry.
CITASA calls on all role players to stand together against the escalating violence and to intensify efforts to protect those who work in the CIT industry.
Four lives lost in a matter of hours is four lives too many.
This must be a turning point.
